Should I have an online presence for my Australian small business?

H

ow did you last find a new restaurant to have a meal at? It may have been a recommendation from a co-worker or a friend, but more likely, you went to Google and searched “Thai food near me”.

There were probably a few options when you searched - one place with no reviews, one without any operating times and finally a restaurant website with a menu, operating times, and multiple reviews indicating a killer Pad Thai. You probably went to the restaurant that had all its information online.

Having an online presence is necessary for restaurants, but is it necessary for all small businesses? Yes, because every business can benefit from owning and developing their online presence, and here’s why.

Customers will know about your business

Don’t you hate it when you go to a shop only to find that it’s closed? You already committed to going to the location, and going back empty-handed is not an option, so you need to find a nearby alternative.

This kerfuffle could have been avoided if all the shops public information was easily accessible online.

By having all the businesses information online, customers are more likely to choose your business because they know exactly what your business offers, its operating hours, and its location.

Have a leg up on the competition

According to a study by Google, 88% of people take action after looking up local information, with 61% of people calling the business and 59% visiting the business.

Suppose your competitor has an online presence, whether it be through social media, having a website, or online advertising, and your business doesn’t. In that case, it is almost certain their business will attract more customers.

Social Media

Social media is a way for businesses to interact with their customers that haven’t called or have visited the store. With 72% of all Australians active on social media, having a social presence would lead to massive outreach to potential customers, 24/7.

What should I take away from this?

In 2019, all small businesses needed to control and develop their online presence. It is continuing to be the growing way to communicate with consumers about what you have to offer, a way to find new customers, and a way to have a leg up on your competitors. Build and maintain an online presence, and it is one specificmethod to simplify your business.
